Cyclone Melissa is predicted to become a rare Category 5 hurricane as it shifts towards Jamaica, causing dangerous rapid inundation and rock falls.

This weather system, which recorded winds of up to 120 mph as of 6:00 AM GMT, is currently turning north-west in the Caribbean and is expected to make landfall by early next week, as reported by meteorological authorities.

Warnings of blackouts and damage to infrastructure have been announced as this storm produces up to thirty inches of precipitation and coastal flooding as high as 4m above ground. "Find safe refuge immediately," residents have been told.

Melissa is the thirteenth storm in the ongoing Atlantic storm period, which usually concludes in the eleventh month.

A category five cyclone is the strongest type, with sustained winds of at least 252 km/h.

"But the best way to manage worry and any nervousness and anxiety is to remain prepared."

Locals are being advised to protect their properties with sand barriers and plywood sheets, and to gather necessary supplies.

Advisories are also in effect for parts of the neighboring country including the primary urban center, the adjacent nation and eastern Cuba, where the hurricane is anticipated to bring analogous consequences by the middle portion of the coming week.

Rock slides presently generated by the cyclone have already killed two in Haiti, according to the nation's Civil Protection agency.

The hurricane is predicted to move across the island nation by the middle of the week before moving through the Greater Antilles and emerging into the open ocean.

By the time it makes contact with the Caribbean nation, it is forecast to have reduced to a third-level hurricane.
