European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures who have been central to campaigns to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

The bans were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
